How to Make a Difference - Easy Sustainable Switches

How to Be More Sustainable in 2020

The statistics are scary. Our earth is rapidly dying, and sometimes it seems a little hopeless. The good new is that change is possible. Everyone can incorporate little changes into their lives to make a difference and reduce the earth’s carbon footprint, one day at a time. Here are some of our top tips to incorporate more sustainable actions into your daily lives, to make you and the world a better place.

Eat More Plant-Based

  • Go vegan or vegetarian at least once a week

    • According to research, if everyone just went vegetarian once a week, the U.S. would save 100 billions gallons of water, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1.2 million tons of carbon dioxide.

    • Not only that, but being vegan or vegetarian lowers your risk of heart disease, cancer, and improves brain function (among other amazing benefits!)

  • Eat your leftovers! There are tons of ways to make old leftovers in the fridge a new delicious meal. Stir fry’s and soups are some of our fav’s!

Get Involved in the Fair Trade Market

  • The fair trade market has a mission to create a more equal earth. This includes income sustainability, empowerment, taking care of the earth, and the well-being of individuals and communities. By purchasing fair trade, you’re doing right for other humans and the planet.

  • One fair trade coffee purchase can increase that families income by 100%

  • Shop locally

  • Consider buying locally grown food

  • Bulk stores are a great way to reduce waste + save money!

Clean Up the Earth

  • Try going plastic free one day a week. The world is now using a million plastic bottles for minute, and most of those aren’t being recycled. Plastic in the ocean and in landfills are becoming a huge problem, and we need to step up to the plate and take care of our earth.

  • Make it a mission to take a day and go clean up a park.

  • Do something for Earth Day

  • Recycle everything! This includes thrifting. By buying used clothing, you are not only making a difference in the Earth’s carbon footprint, but finding unique fits that no one else has.

  • Drives less. Start by walking to class or biking. One gallon of gas creates 2) pounds of carbon dioxide. Imagine that being added up over a lifetime!

  • If you have to drive, try carpooling!

Spend Time Outdoors

  • Participate in community gardens.

  • Compost. If you don’t have your own garden or live in the country, there are compost services in big cities for as little as $8 a week!

  • Spend time in nature

In the Kitchen…

  • Reusable utensil kits. So many waste-free stores and shops have them, you can also find them on amazon :-)

  • Keep Cups

  • Fair Trade Coffee

  • Stop buying plastic things you don’t need! By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. That’s if we keep going about life as we do now. It’s never too late to make a difference.

Honorable Mentions

  • Plant trees outside

  • Use more renewable energy

    • switching out light bulbs, etc.

  • Turn the lights off when you leave the room

  • Take cold showers! It doesn’t sound fun, but it actually makes a difference. This doesn’t use electricity or heat, and conserves water.

Shop ethically and support small businesses.

Because no one ever made a difference by being like everybody else.
